The 86th Bird Flu Case in Indonesia

Jakarta, March 16, 2007, Ministry of Health - Specimens tested at the Ministry of Health Research and Development Center and the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology in Jakarta have confirmed that BAJ (male, 32 years of age), a Jakarta resident, was infected with the Bird Flu virus. Confirmation from the 2nd laboratory came on Friday afternoon, March 16, 2007.  The  number of human Bird Flu cases in Indonesia now stands at 86 victims, including 65 fatalities.   The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) for human cases in Indonesia is 75.6%. 

The information was released by the Bird Flu Communication Center, Directorate General of Diseases Control and Environmental Health, Ministry of Health, to the Public Communication Center , Ministry of Health, on 16 March 2007.

On March 7, 2007, BAJ, suffering from fever, visited a physician for treatment. On March 13, BAJ, who lived in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, was referred to Emergency Unit of Harum Hospital. On the same day, he was diagnosed with suspected bird flu.  On March 14, at 01.30 Local Time, BAJ, was referred to Persahabatan Hospital, suffering from breathing problems. Unfortunately, BAJ died at 08.30 on the same day. BAJ is the 22nd Bird Flu case in DKI Jakarta province.

For the purpose of Bird flu research and control, on March 14, 2007, a surveillance officer from the Public Health Center of Duren Sawit Subdistrict and a physician from Pondok Kelapa Public Health Center investigated the case at the victim’s house. One bird was seen but there were no dead birds or influenza-like illness (ILI) cases within the victim’s neighborhood.

The Public Health Office and Public Health Center are closely watching for ILI in BAJ’s neighborhood, and will disseminate bid-flu information to the people in the neighborhood.  Today, a team from Directorate General of Disease Control and Environmental Health, the Ministry of Health further investigated the case, by interviewing the victim’s family members, local people and workmates.  Animal husbandry office also conducted investigation. There are no signs of contact with birds. Further investigation is underway.
