The 85th Bird Flu Case in Indonesia
Jakarta, March 12, 2007, Ministry of Health - A resident of East Java Province, SNA (F, 20 years of age), has tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The infection was confirmed as a result of PCR testing conducted at the Ministry of Health Research and Development Center on March 11, 2007. Since March 10, an epidemiological investigation has been conducted by a team consisting officials from the Health Office of Mojokerto District and the Health Office of East Java Province.
This report was received by the Centre for Public Communication from the Avian Influenza Communications Center, Directorate General of Diseases Control and Environmental Health, Ministry of Health, on Monday, March 12.
SNA, a resident of Dusun Sumber Pandan, Mojotamping Village, Bangsal Subdistrict, Mojokerto District, East Java, first began showing bird-flu symptoms on February 28, 2007. On March 8, 2007, she was referred to dr. Soetomo Public Hospital after being treated at Prof. Soekandar Public Hospital in Mojokerto. Before falling ill, SNA had cleaned a dead-bird disposal facility at the back of her house.
To date 85 people have tested positive for H5N1 influenza in Indonesia, including 64 fatalities. SNA is the first AI positive case in East Java, within January-March 2007. The total cases of AI in East Java now is 7, with 3 fatalities.
