Indonesia’s New Avian Influenza Human Case

Jakarta, 9 July 2007- A new case of Avian Influenza was confirmed Monday. SZ , a 6.5 year-old boy from Cilegon Municipality, Banten Province, tested positive of H5N1 virus based on a result of tests conducted by the Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Health. The Jakarta-based Eijkman Insitute laboratory also confirmed that SZ was infected by H5N1.    

SZ experienced onset of illness on July 1, 2007 with symptoms of fever, cough, breathing problems, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, and pneumonia. On July 5, 2007 he was admitted to Siloam Gleneagles Hospital in Tangerang, Banten. He then  transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital Sulianti Saroso in Jakarta on  the same day. The risk factor is  yet to be identified.

SZ died at Sulianti Saroso Hospital on July 8, 2007 at 13.15.  
As of July 9, 2007, the country’s total number of Avian Influenza case on human is 102 with 81 fatalities.
