Jembrana District Temporarily Bans Transport of Poultry

Jakarta, August 21, 2007 - The Jembrana District administration in west Bali has
issued a regulation banning the transportation and trade of poultry inand out of the district for one month in an effort to prevent thespread of the bird flu virus.

Jembrana authorities imposed the ban, PerBup Jembrana 24-2007, on 17August, 2007, after one of the district's residents, a 29-year oldwoman, was infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. An investigationrevealed that the woman had been exposed to infected chickens in thearea. Authorities have undertaken a number of control activities tocontain the virus, including the mass culling of local birds, the useof disinfectant, and mounting a public information campaign. The banon transporting poultry expires 17 September 2007.
