Jakarta, 26 January 2007 - The United States Ambassador to Indonesia, B. Lynn Pascoe, today officially handed over 100,000 sets of personal protective equipment for distribution to avian influenza control programs. The protective gear is part of a US$ 24 million U.S. Government program to assist Indonesia in combating the spread of avian influenza. The death toll from avian influenza in Indonesia has recently reached 63 with six new deaths since the beginning of 2007.

Jakarta, 26 January 2007, Ministry of Health: Tests conducted at the Health Ministry’s Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) laboratory and at the NAMRU-2 laboratory have confirmed a new human H5N1 influenza case in Central Java Province. The case, “Q” (Female, 6-year old) a resident of Magelang Regency, Central Java, was confirmed to be infected with the H5N1 influenza virus as a result of RT – PCR testing (Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction) on the 25th of January 2007. Up to 26 January 2007, there have been a total of 81 confirmed human H5N1 influenza cases in Indonesia, including 63 fatalities.

Jakarta, 22 January 2007, Ministry of Health – Tests conducted at the Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) of the Ministry of Health and NAMRU-2 laboratories have confirmed Indonesia’s 62nd human case of H5N1 Influenza. The case, identified only as “T”, (F, 32-year old) was a resident of Cihuni Village, in Pangatikan District, Garut Regency, West Java. T became ill on January 11, 2007 and was brought to dr. Slamet General Hospital, Garut, on January 17, 2007, with symptoms of fever, cough, heavy breathing and leucopoenia. A roentgen test result showed that she had right lung infiltrate. T died two days after admission, on January 19, 2007 at 10.50 local time. The Health Ministry has dispatched a team to Garut Regency. The team comprises members from the Health Research and Development Agency and the General Directorate of Disease Control and Environment Restoration.

Jakarta, January 12, 2007 -- The National Committee of Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Preparedness (Komnas FBPI) held a meeting with a panel of experts Friday, gathering analysis of the current bird flu outbreak in Jakarta and Tangerang, West Java that has infected five people, of which four of them died.

Jakarta, January 11, 2007 Ministry of Agriculture - Related to the human cases of Avian Influenza (AI) in Rawalele sub village, Kalideres village, West Jakarta, DKI Jakarta administration, along with West Jakarta mayoralty and Ministry of Agriculture have conducted poultry surveillance and culling in the neighborhood.

Jakarta, 9 January 2007, Ministry of Health- Two persons have been confirmed for the avian influenza virus through laboratory examinations conducted by the  Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) of the Health Ministry. With these two new cases, to 7 January 2007, there have been 76 human H5N1-positive cases, including 57 fatalities. The last two cases are Rd (M, 14), a citizen of Kali Deres, West Jakarta, and Rh (F, 37), a citizen of Serpong, Tanggerang. Rd has been treated in Persahabatan Hospital, East Jakarta since 5 January 2007. Rh was referred to be treated in the same hospital by Tanggerang Regional Hospital, on 8 January 2007.
